General surgery is a specialty dealing with pre-operative, operative and post-operative management of surgical problems of all kinds; especially those relating to the abdomen, alimentary canal, soft tissues, endocrine system and, in many cases, the head and the neck.
Patients who are critically ill or gravely injured are first treated in General Surgery department before they are taken to other departments for further treatment. At Manipal Hospital, we have a highly experienced team of general surgeons who excel in handling critical situations. The doctors are specially trained to conduct emergency surgeries to contain excessive bleeding, bowel obstructions, organ perforations, burns and abdominal trauma. Other than emergencies, they also routinely carry out operations for complications such as appendicitis, hernia, gallbladder removal, thyroid and removal of tumors.
Minimally invasive surgery is also known as keyhole surgery or band aid surgery or laproscopic surgery is a modern day surgical technique, wherein a small incision of about 0.5-1.5 cm wide is made to perform surgeries in the abdomen. It has many benefits over traditional open surgery namely; less pain, lesser infection risk, reduced chances of hemorrhage and post-operative scarring, reduced need for pain medication and shorter hospital stay. Laparoscopic procedures carried out include:
- Appendicectomy and Hernia repair
- Splenectomy and Colectomy
- Pancreatic Pseudocyst Drainage
- Surgery for Morbid Obesity
- Hepatobilliary and Pancreatic Disease
- Endocrine and Colorectal surgery
Manipal Hospital Malaysia is one of the pioneers to introduce Minimal Access Surgery in the state. This surgical procedure has revolutionized the surgical management of many diseases with minimal discomfort to the patients and faster recovery.
Today, a number of operative procedures are done laparoscopically and many innovative techniques have been introduced by our experienced and talented specialists with excellent results. Minimal Access Surgery involves the introduction of a scope into the body through a minimal cut (2 - 10 mm). The area is viewed through a video camera attached to the monitor.
The main advantage of laparoscopic surgery is faster recovery as there is no big incision. Most of these patients are discharged within 48 hours and they can resume work within a week.
In early days, the main drawback of minimal access surgery was the cost, but now the patients can avail the service at an affordable cost. Advanced laparoscopic procedures like colectomy, fundoplication, obesity surgery etc may cost more, but considering the faster recovery and early discharge, it may not be significant. The operating rooms are well equipped with surgical equipments like Harmonic Scalpel and imaging equipments. Our Anaesthetic staff is well experienced and the excellent post operative care enables us to perform complex surgeries in high risk patients.
